We also are pleased to welcome Alicia Bennett who joins the band on band on cornet and James Lovett on B Flat Bass. With a very full bandroom now, there are few vacancies and the band is looking forward to contesting at Leamington Spa on the 23rd November.

Player updates

We are very pleased to announce a number of new players who join the ranks of YWDB. We are very fortunate to welcome Benjamin Beavis who joins on cornet. Benjamin replaces Gaby Roesti who we were sad to say goodbye to July when she returned back her home in Switzerland. Benjamin comes with a wealth of experience in the world of brass banding. Having conducted his own band in Brisbane and played with a number of notable bands in Australia, Benjamin's most recent playing experience in an English Brass Band was when he performed on solo cornet with the Leyland Band, last year at the National Finals.

The band is also pleased to welcome Paul Mattias on Trombone. Paul comes with extensive playing experience, having recently moved over from the States. Having formed his own Trombone quartet in the States, he is very keen to continue this within YWDB where there are no less than six Trombone players within the band.

We also welcome Kate Stark on Baritone who has had much experience in playing in bands 'up north' and Tim who most recently played with the band of Warwick University at the National Finals.

In addition, membership of the training band has recently grown and now the whole organisation of YWDB boasts 50 members. We still need a Soprano Cornet player though. If interested, please visit our vacancies page.

News from the bandroom

New Player joins on bass trombone.

In the past Chris Pass has played for a number of top draw bands in London, Hillingdon and Hanwell to name but two. He hadn't played brass for four years when he found an old college friend, Margaret Heron, one of our percussionists, on the website Friends United. They both studied music during the 1960s and had not been in touch for over forty years.

He noticed Margaret's profile on the site was in a band and when he found out it was a local one to him, asked if he could come along. Chris has been attending regularly now for a couple of weeks and we are happy he has decided to become a member.

In another change to the trombone section, Band Secretary Lynne Cole has moved temporarily from 1st trombone to cornet to help out the backrow at forthcoming concert. To cover John Ide will move up from 2nd trombone to 1st.

We were all very pleased to welcome back Ivan Hunger whom we hadnt seen at band since early December last year. Ivan is a Ski instructor by profession and spends most of the early part of the year in the Swiss mountains plying his trade. As the bass trombone seat is filled, he has been moved to Bb bass for the forthcoming summer season of concerts, where he is doing an excellent job.

Become a "fan" of Yiewsley and West Drayton Band

Yiewsley and West Drayton Band has taken a step forward into the world of social networking by having a page on facebook.com. It contains pictures, news stories from the bandroom, event information, and will soon carry video and audio clips. Facebook users become "fans" and receive a news feed on any updates made to the band page.

Clayton MacLean, Yiewsley's PR Officer, is confident that the move will encourage followers of the band to give their reactions to the band's concert performances, their suggestions on repetoire and on how they would like to see the band progress. Also it will provide a platform for past and present members to keep in contact and finding out what they have been up to in the brass band movement.

Paul Barker, Band Chairman said

"Facebook is a fantastic way for people to interact and connect with each other, especially if they have shared interests, so it seemed logical that the Band should try and become a part of it."

To see or become a fan of the Yiewsley and West Drayton Facebook page you need to create a Facebook account. www.facebook.com.

Service to Celebrate the Life of Jill Charman

The band took part in a service to celebrate the life of Jill Garman, who died in early February 2008. On a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon, St Matthews Church, Yiewsley, was filled with a large congregation of her family, friends and the many people who had known Jill. Jill was a very rare person, with can-do attitude, who was always ready and willing to help people, in any way she could. She was a great supporter of the band. With her husband John she owned and ran the “Riverside Hotel” Yiewsley, where most of the band ends up for a beer on a Friday night after rehearsing. If she was there she would always made everyone feel welcome. We contributed two pieces of music she loved. A beautiful arrangement of “All in the April Evening”, and “Spread a Little Happiness”. We also accompanied the hymn “Thine be the Glory” taking direction from our musical director, Chris Cole, who was playing the organ. We would like to thank Jill’s husband, John, for inviting the band to take part in this event.

St George's Day Parade

We were in the thick of celebrations to mark St Georges Day, taking part in a procession from RAF Northolt to a very popular pub, The Bell in Ruislip Gardens. At its head was a modern day St George on his horse back. Landlady of the Bell, Rose Ramsden said“This is not the first time that we have celebrated St Georges day, but it seems to have grown each year, this is what our customers have asked for. I can envisage this event getting stronger and bigger as each year passes, but this is the first attempt of really raising the profile of St Georges Day in Ruislip”. In front of the pub a George’s flag was raised by a banner party from Eastcote British Legion while we played “Land of Hope and Glory” , followed by the hymn Jerusalem. Afterwards we entertained the crowds with a selection of marches: “Army of the Nile”, “Slaidburn”, “March of the Cobblers” and, of course, “Standard of St George”. All monies raised from the evening were donated to the Royal British Legion. We would like to thank the organising committee, in particular their secretary, Keith Smith, for inviting the band to take part.

Another Disappointing Result at SCABA Spring Contest

The band fought their way through the worst snowfall to hit the South East in 20 years to take part in the second section at SCABA’s Hove contest. We had prepared a wonderful piece called “Laudate Dominum” by Edward Gregson and a march, The Contestor. In 2006 at a SCABA contest the band came 1st with Laudate and we were hoping for great things as we were generally please with how the rehearsals had gone. The adjudacator was Steve Pritchard-Jones, who had only three weeks before, had awarded the band a very low placing at the “Areas”. On that occasion he was very critical of our style and intonation. Again, we went home disappointed, coming 6th out of a field of seven bands. Mr. Steve Prichard-Jones awarding 182 points for both our test piece and march. His remarks were much more positive than at the Areas and we were pleased he didn’t make any mention of intonation. He did praise our trombone section and solo euphonium. As a band we collectively we were happy that we had given the best performance we could manage and enjoyed the experience, which was more important to us than the result at the end of the day. We would like to thank Dave and Matt Ruel, and Tim Colnbrook for their help and support at Hove.

Disappointment at the Areas

It is often remarked by players “you shouldn’t take part in brass band contests unless you have a sense of humour”. It was lucky we had ours after coming 12th out of 13 in the 2nd section at London and Home Counties Regional Brass Band Championships, Stevenage. Our performance of Kenneth Downie’s “Three-Part Invention” wasn’t perfect but there were some really nice moments, beautiful moments, particularly in the wonderful 2nd movement. However, we suffered some intonation problems and some balance issues, particularly in the last movement, the Caprice. A similar result last year may have resulted in our demotion, but a 4th place on that occasion means that there is not much change in our position in the grading table (“league”); provisionally we are in 12th place. We definitely need a strong result next year. We are looking forward to travelling down to Hove on 6th April for the SCABA Spring Contest.

Great time at Butlins!

YWDB had a great time at Butlins this year. With a full band, YWDB went on stage and gave a good account of An Alberta Suite by Derek Broadbent. The adjudicators commented on a good opening although with a slightly untidy finish which gave us 9th place in strong field of bands. The band were pleased with their performance; 4barsrest giving special mention to the tenor horn section who credited themselves well with their performance in the 3rd movement.

Christmas Season now over

The Christmas Season was a very busy one for YWDB with four major concerts in Ruislip, Ickenham, Harefield and Yiewsley. The concert in Yiewsley took place in St. Matthew's Church when the band, combined together with the pupils from St. Matthew's Primary Schoo, made Christmas 2007 a memorable one, and it certainly was. With tickets sold out for this concert, there was a waiting list for entry at the door. With over 170 in the audience and over 60 performers, this certainly was a memorable concert. YWDB was also very proud to present performances from the Training Band, who accredited themselves very well.

YWDB's concert for the Ruislip Lions was also considered to be a roaring success with an immediate invitation back for next year. The band was fortunate to play in both afternoon and evening concerts to a packed audience on each occassion.

The concert in Ickenham took place in the Compass Arts Theatre, a joint concert with Captial Connections. Again, the band performed to a packed audience and finished off the evening by accompanying community carol singing.

Overall, a good season for the band. YWDB are now deep into preparations for competing in the forthcoming Butlins Mineworkers' Contest in Skegness on 19th January 2008. With only one or two vacancies in the band, YWDB are brimming with excitement for a successful 2008. If you are interested in joining the band, please click on the vacancies page.

Contest Success at Folkestone

The band was delighted to receive two trophies at this popular SCABA Autumn Contest where the band competed against a strong line-up of bands. David Hirst was adjudicating at the contest and awarded YWDB 3rd prize for it's performance of Oceans (Goff Richards). The band gave an exciting account of this piece and the adjudicator commented that this was 'a good performance' with a 'musical style and convincing playing'. The highlight for the day was being awarded 1st prize for the Hymn Tune. This is the first time that the band has received this prize since playing at Folkestone. The band performed the hymn tune 'Lloyd' with great control and depth. The adjudicator commented on the nice sounds of the band which were well together and went on to say that the 'phrases were well shaped'. This was a very good day and marked the 10th anniversay that the band restarted contesting. Well done YWDB....and here's to the next!

We hope to have pictures of our contest success on the site very soon.

October 07
Full line-up for Folkestone

The band is pleased to announce a full line-up for the forthcoming contest at Folkestone in October. In particular, we are very pleased to welcome new signings: Gabby Roesti, Chris Scott, David Ruel and Kevin Bennell Gabby joins us on the front bench from Switzerland having played at Championship level in her own country. Her experience is a welcome asset to the band. Chris joins us on Percussion, having also played at a very high level. Kevin augments the bass section on E Flat, being well-known to members of the band and having extensive playing experience. David is condutor of Cobham Band and has been well known to YWDB for many years, having also been a Musical Director of the band.

The band also welcomes back Mark Greaves on B Flat Bass and David Walton on Tenor Horn.

YWDB AT BIGGIN HILL - ANOTHER GREAT EVENT!

For the third year running, the band was invited to play for the annual Biggin Hill parade and evening event to commemorate the Battle of Britain. This, like previous years, was a special event. The band played for the parade in the late afternoon to a large group of invited guests and then in the evening to a packed audience. The evening concert was, once again, a particular success with the band performing Spitfire Prelude, Nimrod, The Great Escape, High on a Hill and the Dambuster's March. The encore of Jerusalem followed a standing ovation by the audience. Afterwards, there were many compliments given by the audience as the band began to prepare to leave for West London; many said that this was the best year yet. We hope to have some photographs from Biggin Hill on the website very shortly.

September 07
Folkestone 2007

The band is able to confirm that it will be entering for the Autumn Contest in Folkestone in October of this year. The band is very excited and looking forward to putting a good performance together for such a well-established contest. There have been many new signings in the band recently which has created a real buzz in the bandroom. Take a look on the personnel page for more information.

22 July 07
Songs of Praise

Invited by the Churches Together organisation in Northwood, the band was delighted to accompany a Songs of Praise event in the gardens of the London Theology College. With a full band, the music was very rousing and created a solid accompaniment for the singers.

30 June 2007
YWDB in Uxbridge

On 30th June, Yiewsley and West Drayton Band joined the well-established Uxbridge Choral Society for a concert in St. Margaret's Church, Uxbridge. This concert was a resounding success. Performing at their very best, the band played music which included 'Festive Overture (Shostakovich), Shine as a Light (Peter Graham)and Pavanne (Faure). The band played to a full house and were well received by both the audience and the choir. Joint items with the choir included Psalm 23 (from the Vicar of Dibley), Gaelic Blessing (Rutter) and Vaughan William's arrangement of the 'Old Hundredth'. The band really enjoyed the evening and look forward to another joint concert in the future.

21 Apr 2007
Special Anniversary Concert

The band was very pleased to be invited to take part in a concert to mark the 125th anniversary of the Salvation Army in High Wycombe. The concert was a joint one with the Singing Company of the Salvation Army and Daniel de Gruchy Lambert, one of the country's high profile Trumpet players. The concert was a roaring success. An article in a newsletter commented that our performance of Light Walk was electrifying and that the reading of Caveralleria Rusticana, with it sweeping phrases, was achieved admirably. The newsletter went on to say that 'after the interval, the band brought a variety of delightful styles, which not only served to demonstrate their all-round competence, but also ensured that all tastes were catered for. The challenging Peter Graham classic, Shine as a Light, was especially appreciated by lovers of the Salvation Army music.'

The band looks forward to returning for another concert some time in the future.

In the Mix!

Yiewsley and West Drayton band got close on Saturday at the National Finals Regional Qualifiers, when they came a very creditable fourth out of a field of 15 in the second section.

The band would like to thank all the players who helped out in the months leading to this. The band is now moving on to concentate on the large number of engagements it has in the next few months.

Its a Boy! ...

Congratulations go out to our Principle cornet Gordon Poole and his wife Tracey, who gave birth to a baby boy in the wee small hours of this morning ( 7th March, and just in time for the areas ). Both mother and baby are doing fine by all accounts and the band wishes both of them all the best. Of course the question now is.... whats it going to play? ( we're a bit short on trombones at the mo...)...

06 Mar 2007
Carnival to the Fore!

With the 'Area' contest almost upon us, the band has been working particularly hard on the set test piece 'Carnival (Helen Perkin). Since returning from the Butlins Mineworkers' Contest, the band has welcomed a number of new players. With a full band, we look forward to making a good performance of such a respected piece of music.

In particular, the band welcomes Natalie Dodman, Will Johnston, Vic Aldridge and Alan Goodall to the cornet bench. Mike Mayo returns to the band from Spain on Euphonium and we welcome a new signing on Trombone.....Altogether there is a great atmosphere at the band and we look forward to giving a good account of Carnival at Stevenage on 17th March 2007.

01 Feb 2007
The Butlins Bug!

Once again the band made it's now annual pilgrimage to the windswept venue of Skegness to compete in the Butlins Minerworkers festival.

This year the test piece was the wonderful ( but tricky ) Kaleidescope by Phillip Sparke, and the band were hoping to better their performance of this piece from Leamington where they came runners up.

Sadly it seemed that the fates conspired against us as for the second year in succession the band drew the number 1 slot. To make matters worse Lyn Blake our repiano player succumbed to a stomache bug and was unable to play. Fortunately her husband John was able to move back from the front row to cover the part.

Despite this the band put on a very creditable performance and came a solid 9th out of 17 bands. After that the band indulged in some serious socialising including the grand "Yes We Do Bowling" Challenge!

Christmas Roundup

Christmas kicked off this year with a concert at the Yiewsley and West Drayton Community centre, which raised just over £400 pounds for the cancer drop in centre in Yiewsley.

The concert showcased the talents of not just the main band but the Training band and the children of St Mathews Primary School.

The band was then busy with concerts at Harefield community centre and St Catherines church, West Drayton as well as carolling at Harlington Baptist Church, our anual Carol service at West Drayton Green ( which seems to attract more and more people every year ) and outside Tescos and Coop, the latter of which raised a whopping £1500 for the band funds!.

30 Nov 2006
FAREWELL MR WALTON

The band is sad to announce the departure of David Walton. David came to the band in 1998 at a time when we were competing in the fourth section and has been a major part of the band's development. For most of this time, David was the band's regular Flugal player before moving on to cornet and then tenor horn. David's move to Essex gives him the challenge of finding another band to play with. We all wish him well in the future and hope that he will keep strong links with the band.

29 Nov 2006
2ND AT LEAMINGTON! November 2006

The band took to the stage at Leamington Spa on Sunday 26th November with a performance of Kaleidoscope and came away with 2nd prize! The band were particularly excited about this result, as the standard of playing from all bands on the day was very high, and all the bands that took part were experienced at achieving high results at contests. The adjudicator commented that the band gave a very fine account of the piece as well as some good contrasts between the sections. The band are now looking forward to the Butlins Mineworkers' Contest at Skegness when they will have chance to perform Kaleidoscope once again. Onwards and upwards YWDB!

01 Nov 2006
MORE NEW SIGNINGS IN TIME FOR LEAMINGTON

The band are pleased to announce three new signings in time for the Leamington Spa Contest on 26th November 2006. This is the first time that the band will take part in the West Midlands Annual Brass Band Contest. The band welcomes Perry O'Brien on 2nd Cornet who previously played with Blackpool Brass on the front row. John Wright and Liam Compson on Percussion with Marcus Thompson sigining on Bass Trombone in the absence of the band's regular Bass Trombone player. The band are looking forward to this contest and giving their performance of Kaleidoscope in preparation for Butlins Mineworkers' Contest in January. The last time the band played Kaleidoscope was in 2004 at the 'Area' contest when the band came a credible 3rd. Let's see what we can do this time!

19 Oct 2006
MORE NEW FACES

The band has been pleased to welcome even more new faces into the bandroom. Ceri Williams joins the band on B Flat Bass. He has recently moved to London and comes to us from the Parc and Dare Band. Ceri has had much experience in the field of brass banding and has played at the very top level, including a spell with the Hendon Band, back in the 90s.

The band have also been fortunate to welcome to other new faces as well. More information will be posted here at a later date.

29 Sep 2006
HELLO AND GOODBYE

On Friday 29th September, the band said goodbye to our percussionist, Peter Blake, as he begins his course at Southampton University studying Physics. Peter has been the real lead in the Percussion Section over the last three years and the band would like to thank him for all his hard efforts. At his last rehearsal, the band presented Peter with a card and a crate of beer (which is useful for a student!). We wish him all the best with his studies and hope that he will return to visit us during his holidays.

Whilst saying goodbye to Peter we were pleased to welcome Adele Tremenheere on E Flat Bass. Adele was with the band many moons ago and left the band to go and study Music and Marketing at ChristChurch College in Canterbury. The band was very pleased to welcome back Adele into the band, especially the MD who taught Adele at St. Matthew's back in the late 90s.

16 Sep 2006
THE SOUND OF ELGAR AT BIGGIN HILL

On Saturday 16th September, the band took part in a parade and concert at Biggin Hill to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. As Biggin Hill was further away than the band's usual engagements, a coach was booked for the event. The band first became involved in this event last year and, as a result of such a good performance, were invited back for a second year. The band accompanied the afternoon parade, which involved a fly past from a Spitfire.

However, the real excitement came in the evening when the band had been requested to play a number of pieces to fit around speeches and readings. The atmosphere was very powerful with the band producing a very powerful rendition of Elgar's Nimrod and later, Pomp and Circumstance Number 1, which was later used as the encore as the audience stood and applauded the band's for its efforts. The concert had opened with High on a Hill. Donna Tubb, the band's assistant principal cornet stood at the back of the hall and opened with the first few bars which led into this very fine cornet solo, played by Gordon Poole (Principal Cornet). This was the start to a very moving evening. The band played other music which included Spitfire Prelude, Miller Magic, Pack up Your Troubles and the RAF March Past.

At the end of the concert, the organiser told the band that he had heard nothing but praise for their efforts. Other people in the audience commented that the band seemed to be on real form at the moment. The concert was recorded by the Fenner Production Team. Ray Fenner, (2nd Baritone) said that the evening 'was truly an experience not to have been missed' and Ian Carter (2nd Horn) had commented how wonderful it was to play such great music in a ceremony such as this. The evening concert was held in the chapel at Biggin Hill. The band is now preparing for its next concert: 'The Best of British' which will be performed on the 18th November in St. John's Church, Northwood. Pictures of this event will be posted here soon.

BUTLINS FOR YWDB IN 2007!

Yes, once again, Yiewsley and West Drayton Band have decided to enter the Butlins and Mineworkers Contest at Butlin's resort in Skegness, playing one of their favourite test pieces, 'Kaleidoscope' by Phillip Sparke. The band are really looking forward to this event and have already begun to book their accommodation.

20 Aug 2006
WELCOME TO NEW PLAYERS

The band is very fortunate to welcome three new cornet players. Richard Coltart, Phillip Keates and Jonathan Quinnel.

Richard has just moved into the area from Bristol, but originally came from Yorkshire where he started to play the cornet at the age of 10. As a Soprano player, Richard played with several youth bands and senior bands in Yorkshire before moving to play for the Forest of Dean for 4 years; he also had a spell of playing for the 'Flower' (now 'Polysteel') Band. He then moved 'down South' and played for a while with the Camberley Band.

Phillip has been brought up in The Salvation Army and is playing at High Wycombe corps. He also plays with the territorial and divisional youth bands in the Army, along with the jazz and wind bands at school. Philip is currently being taught by Mark Selwood from Exland Associates, and will be taking his grade 8 in December. (Oh, and he is also a Liverpool fan!)

Jonathan has just returned from a ten year break in his playing career before which time he played on the front row of a third section band. The band welcomes both Phillip and Richard, who will be playing 2nd cornet, and Jonathan on third.

As well as new cornet players, the band is very pleased to announce the arrival of two new Bass Trombone players, Ivan Hunger and Cory Fraser. Ivan, who is a Swiss ski instructor, currently plays with Alder Valley Brass as well as a local 'Big Band'. Corey joins the band after a short break from playing in youth bands in South Australia and is now looking forward to getting 'back into banding' after his break from playing.

More news to come shortly on other new faces appearing in the bandroom!

20 Aug 2006
RECORD ATTENDANCE DURING THE SUMMER!

Attendance at rehearsals during the summer this year have been at a record high. Band practices over the last two months have been full with up to 13 cornet players at one rehearsal during August. This is the result of the band's increased membership coupled with the many new faces that have arrived over recent weeks. The band now has very few vacancies. During August, a number of players applied for positions in the band. On one ocassion, two people applied for just one position! The atmosphere in the band is great and standards are really on the rise!

20 Aug 2006
YWDB ON TOP FORM AT SAVILL GARDENS

On 20th August, the band travelled a few miles down the road to perform at Savill Gardens in Windsor. Whilst the weather was very mixed, the band was on good form and attracted listeners and 'on-lookers' throughout the afternoon. In the absence of Chris Cole, Lee Woodward stepped in as Musical Director and put on a stunning show with the band playing music such as Toccata in D Minor (Bach, arr Farr), Stage Centre, Queen of the Night's Aria (featuring our Soprano player, Steve Burgess), Malaguena, Spanish Eyes (featuring our Principal Cornet player, Gordon Poole) Suite from 'Carmen' and the overture 'Zampa'.

30 Jun 2006
THANK YOU, SHIRLEY!

Recently, the band was informed that long-serving member, Shirley Drake was unable to remain as member of the band as work commitments prevented her from attending rehearsals. Shirley was a member of the band for many years. She really grew up in the band as served over 20 years as a stalwart member. Shirley is featured on several occasions in the book about the band, written by Ken Dickson, entitled A Band for Two Villages . The band were pleased to make a presentation to both Shirley and her Dad, Roy, who had also been a member of the band for about 20 years. We hope that we can welcome both of them back from time to time.

29 May 2006
GOODBYE TO MICK!

The band recently said goodbye to Mick Mayo. Mick Mayo has been with the band since 1997. He originally joined on Euphonium and then moved onto E Flat Bass, a seat that he has held since then. Mick joined at a time when the band was beginning to move forward and new players were arriving. He has seen many changes but especially, the promotion from bottom of the fourth section to the second section over the last five years. After a brief presentation to Mick, he recalled that his last contest with the band will be his most memorable and that the clean sweep at Hove is one that he will always been proud to have taken part in. Best of luck to Mick. We are now in search of an E Flat Bass Player.

30 Apr 2006
A FLUGAL MOVE?

Our regular Flugal player, David Walton, recently announced to the band that he and his family plan to move in the very near future. He therefore has decided to relinquish his Flugal seat and join the cornet section. The hunt begins for a new Flugal player. David will continue to play with the band until he moves away.

30 Apr 2006
CLEAN SWEEP AT HOVE

The band took part in the Annual Spring Contest at Hove this year and came away with a clear win. The adjudicator made it very clear that there was only one winner in this section.

For the first time ever, the band received first prize for the March, which was a set March for the contest entitled Banner of St George. Having been over-awed by our first prize with the March, we then waited to hear our band s name mentioned a further four times! Collecting the first prize at this contest for the main test piece hadn t been the first time. The band had collected first prize at the same contest last year and previously in 2002.

Our Principal Cornet then went onto to collect the soloists prize, the Trombones collected the Trombone sectional prize (which was also won by our band last year as well!) and finally Chris Cole collected the Conductors Prize for best interpretation.

Having produce a very convicincing performance of Gregson's Laudate Dominum the band was very pleased to receive first prize from such a prestigious adjudicator as Alan Morrison. Onward and upward YWDB!
